How to Wipe Your Phone Safely Before Selling It

5 min read · Updated 2026-09-01

The most common reason a sale is delayed at the meetup is not condition — it is a device that is still signed into an account. Ten minutes of prep at home avoids all of it.

Back up first

On iPhone, Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now, or connect to a computer. On Android, confirm Google One backup is current and that Google Photos has finished uploading. Verify the backup completed before you erase anything — there is no undo.

Sign out of everything

This is the step that actually protects your money as well as your data.

  • iPhone — Settings → your name → Sign Out to release Activation Lock
  • Android — remove your Google account to clear Factory Reset Protection
  • Samsung — remove the Samsung account and any Knox enrollment
  • Unpair any Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch tied to the phone

Erase the device

iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Android: Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data. Remove the physical SIM and delete any eSIM profile you are not transferring.

Loose ends people forget

Move authenticator app codes to your new phone before wiping, or you may lock yourself out of your own accounts. Cancel any device-linked subscriptions, remove the device from your carrier account, and remove it from your Find My or Find My Device list once erased.

Frequently asked questions

Is a factory reset enough to protect my data?

On modern encrypted iPhones and Android phones, yes — the encryption key is destroyed, making old data unrecoverable.

What if I already wiped it but forgot to sign out?

You can still remove the device remotely from iCloud or your Google account from any browser.

Should I wipe a broken phone?

If it powers on, yes. If not, remove it from your account remotely instead.
