Why locked phones pay less

An unlocked phone can be sold to anyone on any network, anywhere. A locked phone can only be sold to a customer on that specific carrier, which slows the turn and narrows demand. That difference shows up in the price — and it shows up as a clearly labelled line on your quote, not as a vague haircut.

Should you unlock before selling?

Usually, yes. Most carriers will unlock a device once the line has been active for a set period and the hardware is paid off. The request is free, takes a couple of business days, and often raises the offer by more than the hassle is worth.
